BROQ STORY
BROQ International was born from the passion of a crew of surfers who grew up riding the waves of Florida. Our journey began in the late eighties, catching our first waves as Grommets, a rush we’ve been chasing ever since and plan to until our last days.
Our surfing heritage isn’t glamorous. Unlike the famous surf spots like Pipeline, Sunset, or Bells Beach, our backyard was the West Coast of Florida, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico. Here, fickle beach breaks dominate, and we only had about a hundred days of rideable surf a year. Most of those days were 1-2 foot wind chop, while others hoped for offshore winds, we prayed for onshore winds to create a rideable wave at our local break.
Growing up, we didn’t have the luxury of tracking swells on a desktop computer or iPhone. If the wind blew from the west at 15 mph or more, we’d rush to the beach, hoping to find something to ride, often finding nothing. Our surf trips weren’t exotic getaways to Baja, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Indo, or Hawaii. Instead, they were dawn patrol sessions on Florida’s east coast, fueled by gas money scraped from couch cushions, driving 2 ½ hours for glassy 2-3 foot waves.
Over the years, we’ve gone to great lengths to catch waves in Florida’s challenging and unpredictable surf conditions. We’ve always embraced a “Go for BROQ” mentality, making the most out of every wave, whether it’s knee-high wind chop or head-high a-frames.
Despite growing up, pursuing careers, and raising families, one constant remained: SURFING. We’ve never stopped and never will. Go for BROQ.
